Who We Are
Alleyne Memorial is a Christ-centered A.M.E. Zion congregation committed to spiritual growth, community care, discipleship, leadership and service. We are one church, with one calling, working through different ministries toward the same destination: a stronger church and community for the Kingdom of God.
What Is the A.M.E. Zion Church?
The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a historic Christian denomination known as the Freedom Church, with a legacy of faith, freedom, justice, education and service.
Our History
Alleyne Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church was founded in September 1920 as St. Mark's, originally located at 57th and Ludlow. When St. Mark's moved to 57th and Vine in Philadelphia, the church was renamed Alleyne A.M.E. Zion Church. After the building at 57th and Vine was sold, the congregation moved to its current home at 1249 N. 55th Street, and soon after, the church was renamed Alleyne Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
Rev. John E. Taylor
Founder and first pastor of the congregation.
Rev. A. E. Mann
Rev. Mann served as pastor of Alleyne Memorial on two occasions. He was first appointed in 1936, while the congregation was located at 57th and Vine Streets, and he later served again from 1950 to 1952. In 1951, during his second term as pastor, Alleyne Memorial moved from 57th and Vine Streets to its current location at 1249 N. 55th Street, at the corner of 55th and Thompson Streets.
Rev. Rhea Swann Lomax
Rev. Lomax pastored Alleyne Memorial for twenty years, from 1956 to 1976, the longest pastoral tenure in the church's history. In September 1966, under his leadership, the church held its Mortgage Burning Service.
Mrs. Willie Boston
A diligent worker and supporter of the church, Mrs. Boston would go to the church on Saturday evenings to light the fire so the building would be warm for Sunday morning worship. She also sold dinners from her home for fifty cents a plate and contributed the proceeds toward the purchase of the current church building.
For more than a century, Alleyne Memorial has served West Philadelphia through worship, Christian education, food distribution, evangelism, community outreach, social justice advocacy and neighborhood partnerships.
Our Christian Faith
Alleyne Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church is part of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, historically known as the Freedom Church. We affirm the historic Christian faith as expressed in the Apostles' Creed.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. The third day He arose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, meaning the universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
Rev. Angela Brown-Vann, MBA
Pastor
Rev. Angela Brown-Vann is the Pastor of Alleyne Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the congregation is committed to Building Faith, Building Lives and Building Community, inspired by Nehemiah 4:6.
She is a graduate of La Salle University and the University of Phoenix, holding a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Business Administration degree in Business Administration. She also studied divinity at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Before entering full-time pastoral ministry, Rev. Angela built a successful professional career as a currency trader, mortgage lender, financial planner, financial analyst, financial systems architect and real estate investor. Throughout her professional career, ministry remained her life's calling.
Rev. Angela is a community organizer, social justice advocate and entrepreneur with a passion for equipping churches and communities to create meaningful change. As a founding organizer of Churches Take a Corner (CTAC), she helped mobilize congregations to strengthen neighborhoods through evangelism, outreach, employment initiatives, reentry support and community partnerships.
She serves on the Board of Friends Home and Village and continues to encourage leaders to become agents of hope, justice and transformation.
Rev. Angela was ordained by the late Bishop William James Scott II, founding pastor of Faith Canaan Baptist Church. After joining the A.M.E. Zion denomination, she was ordained as an elder and appointed to pastor Alleyne Memorial by Bishop Brian R. Thompson Sr.
Rev. Angela is married to David E. Vann. Together they have one daughter and four grandchildren, who are a constant source of joy and inspiration.

Rev. Angela's ministry is grounded in the transforming power of becoming a new creation in Christ, the promise of a life rooted in God's Word, and the call to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
She remains guided by the mentorship of Bishop William James Scott II, who often reminded her, "Only what you do for Christ will last." She believes opposition often intensifies when believers commit themselves to meaningful work for Christ. Her ministry encourages people to remain faithful, live as new creations and build a legacy that honors God.

Children's Ministry
Children are led by the Director of Christian Education, Teresa Berry-Lewis. Children begin in the main worship service at 10:00 AM and are dismissed to Children's Church at approximately 10:30 AM on the second and fourth Sundays.
